IMAGINING BETTER

WITH UNIVERSITIES

My research interests are around heritage, sense of place, memory, and identity, particularly in former industrial communities in the North East of England. I was awarded my PhD in 2023 from Newcastle University - you can read it here. Having completed my PhD, I went on to become Senior Research Assistant on the Flourish project, which is a collaboration between Northumbria and Newcastle Universities and Gateshead Council. The project is co-produced with a group of artists and creatives based in Gateshead. See the ‘research’ page for more information about the research-led approach of Imagining Better.

Flourish is a partnership project delivered by Northumbria and Newcastle Universities and Gateshead Council, examining and making recommendations on the role of Local Authorities in supporting the creative industries in place-based projects. Taking a co research approach, we are working with a stakeholder group of Gateshead-based practitioners to co-create knowledge, strategies and policies that better address the needs and aspirations of the sector and those supporting it.

Landscape and memory: everyday experience in the heritage landscapes of North East England

Working with the NLHF funded Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership, the thesis explored the ways in which landscapes are valued as heritage by communities and across generations, considering the ways in which people understand and engage with their local landscapes and how this is mediated by their family relationships and collective memories.
